Another great day in the life of a licensed acupuncturist! 4/18/2008 4/22/2008 5/12/2008 6/04/2008 6/02/2008 Before I start treating a woman for infertility I always try to mention that 30% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. This is not a conversation you want to have with someone who is pregnant. I always try to explain that God gives you from age 13 to 50 to have children because some miracles take a little time and it’s a complicated process. It’s never easy when one of my fertility patients has a miscarriage, it’s never easy. 6/25/2008 7/2/2008 7/24/2008 I’ve seen a few menopause patients this month. Treating menopause with acupuncture is fascinating study. You can read more about how I treat menopause under the conditions treatment section. Because it is hot in Connecticut woman are requesting more frequent treatments for this condition. The weather has been rather damp in Connecticut. Arthritic pains have been the most common complaint this month, hot damp weather.    Last week was slow, I fixed one woman’s chronic foot pain. She was happy. I started lifting weights in February. I have been sore since February. I am lucky to have a few friends that are Chiropractors. One of my previously reported infertility patients called today to tell me "we are going to have TWINS, we are going to have twins” she said, now that’s a very cool day in my life. Health care that was made possible by CHS Life.      Another patient receiving infertility treatments at my office is pregnant. This is why I went to the best school in the country and this is why you want to go to a licensed acupuncturist. What an unbelievable month, 3 of the 5 woman I am treating for infertility got pregnant. The months not over yet, now that’s a great month in the life. I received news that another patient receiving infertility treatment at my office is pregnant. Four women all on their third and final IVF attempt, decided to add acupuncture for their final round of IVF. Treatment started at my office in March of 2008. By April 22nd 2008, three of the four women reported being pregnant. Day in the "Life". I went to Hartford yesterday, the legislate center of Connecticut, to educate and inform the legislature of importance of protecting the high standards for acupuncture in the state. The acupuncture profession has no title protection in CT, which basically means anyone can call themselves an acupuncturist if they have another medical license. My wind stroke patient returned to part time work today. He also went back to Yale to thank the nurses who cared for him during his hospitalization. The nurses did not recognize him at first, they never heard him speak before today and when he explained to them who he was the 3 nurses who cared for him all started to cry. They could not believe it! A member of my family broke his leg this weekend. We went to Yale by ambulance. To say we were treated well would be an understatement. The ambulance crew, doctors, nurses, physician assistances, and even the equipment technician made us laugh and conveyed concern under an extremely stressful moment in our life. Our family doctor called us twice to see how we were doing, thank you all so much! I am enjoying this month. Unfortunately, all healing streaks come to an end. Some months I get into what a friend of mine called a “healing streak.” When almost every patient I treat gets better. This month has been one of those months. For example I had five patients who suffered from sciatica for 3 or more months. Each of these patients had two or more cortisone shots before calling me for an appointment. Four of the five patients with sciatica had complete resolution of there condition in under three visits. The fifty sciatica patient gave up way too soon. I never give up / I never give up! A woman I've been treating for infertility is officially 14 weeks pregnant. Now that's a great day in the life of an acupuncturist. I’ve been reading a book about the Genius of Abraham Lincoln and felt compelled to repeat his words. During his Second Inaugural address, with a Civil war in progress, a war that would claim 600,000 lives, Lincoln said the following: “With malice toward none; with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan—to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” Professional, caring, and extraordinarily competent, that’s how I describe Yale medical. Thank you Yale, The Covello Family People frequently ask me what conditions I treat most frequently. It varies from week to week, most of the time I treat the condition directly and other times I treat the symptoms of the illness. What has changed is my patient’s attitude and openness towards acupuncture. When I first started my practice 6 years ago my patients would tell me “I can’t tell my doctor that I am going for acupuncture.” Three years later patients started to tell me “I told my doctor that I am going for acupuncture because it helps me.” Six years later when I look at my schedule I noticed that many of my patients are nurses, chiropractors, medical doctors, naturopaths, and massage therapists. This week I treated patients with anxiety disorders, prostate issues, MS, back pain, depression, infertility, neck pain, shoulder pain, obesity, bulimia, headaches, common colds, IBS, PMS, Wind Stroke, Hepatitis, Bi-Polar disorder, personality disorder, care gives syndrome, fatigue, and stress related disorders. Cont...I prayed today next to my patient with Wind Stroke. I think I prayed more during the early years I was in practiced. Yet, sometimes I just need a little extra help. I think it would be insane not to pray from time to time, given my job description, sick people call me every day asking for help with conditions their doctors could not resolve. I treat them with nothing more then a box of needles, moxa, alcohol, and cotton balls. My wind stroke patient was able to raise his arm today and make a fist for the first time in 4 months. The patient can speak clearly but has not had improvement in walking. Being an acupuncturist is a humbling experience. Cont...My wind stroke patient returned, his/her speech was clearly improving, I could understand almost all his/her words, speech was slow and required effort but it was clear. The patient was concerned that there was no feeling in his/her hand. I decided to needle the yang jing-well points on the affected arm. The patient did not feel the needles, even when manipulated during the beginning of the treatment. After 20 minutes I manipulated the needles again and the patient felt pain. The ability to feel pain is a good thing for someone previously unable to FEEL ANYTHING in a diseased limb, for the patient this was a good thing and for an acupuncturist giving someone the ability to feel, this is a great day in the life of an acupuncturist. Cont...My wind stroke patient was able to move his/her arm after the treatment was completed today. This was the first time this patient moved the arm in 4 weeks. The traditional diagnosis for this condition is Channel Connection Stroke – Depleted Channels and Connections Allowing Invasion by Wind. -A friend and patient was diagnosed with cancer today. -A chiropractor stopped by my office today, he went out of his way to tell me he was going to take a 200 hour course and start doing acupuncture. Chiropractors and Naturopaths lobbied to have a law passed in CT to allow them to bypass the national requirements for acupuncture. “I guess all I can do is educate my patients about the danger of the so called “medical” acupuncturist. Don't get me wrong I know many great Chiropractors and Naturopaths, providers who I would let treat my son. But this medical acupuncture (legislating competence) is unethical and dangerous.   Please pardon grammar and spelling errors in this section, time is limited, and I have to keep descriptive information out of the stories.      Today a middleman processing company, processing claims for a local insurance company, denied care for a patient whose condition was improving under my care. The patient was able to walk again, but still had groin pain. In less then 10 visits to my office the patient was able to walk and get in the car without assistance. The reason the Insurance company denied care, profits, there written reason, no one can receive more then 4 visits in a month, so this patient will suffer in pain until next month, when I can request more care. One Day in the Life of an Acupuncturist. Today, I was informed by an insurance company representative that regardless of the persons condition or health care needs, no more then 4 visits a month for acupuncture will be authorized. Thank God for CHS Life. I signed up the patient for CHS Life and they got all the treatment they needed. Today, I treated a patient with Wind Stroke over the entire right side of the body. A young person who developed this condition suddenly losing the ability to walk and speak, with the exception of Bell’s palsy this was the most severe case I have treated to date, it was very exciting. The patient was referred to me by his medical doctor. After his treatment the patient was able to speak clearly enough for me to distinguish his words.
