Neck Pain

There is a variety of neck disorders commonly treated at my office in Connecticut (CT). Acupuncture is a wonderful treatment for neck disorders. Patients with acute or chronic neck disorders are candidates for acupuncture treatment.

Stiff Neck
This condition is most commonly seen during the spring and fall months. The patient wakes with a severe stiff neck. Symptoms may include sudden onset, sharp pain, and restricted movement of the neck. This condition usually requires 2 or 3 acupuncture treatments to resolve.

Traumatic Injury
This condition is usually the result of injury sustained at work, car accident, sporting event, or equivalent incident involving blunt force trauma to the neck. Symptoms can include stiffness, pain, radiating pain into one or both arms, numbness or tingling in the hands or arm. In some severe cases patients may have changes in their bowl movements and paralysis.

Because of the complexity of the neck, symptoms can appear almost anywhere in the body. Patients usually come to my office with a medical diagnosis of bulging disk, herniated disks, and/or whiplash.

Age Related Neck Pain
Arthritic changes to the neck can result in chronic and/or intermittent neck pain. This condition might be aggravated by cold and/or damp weather and is frequently relieved with heat. The patient may have a diagnosis of arthritis, bone spurs, and sometimes degenerate disc disease.

Stress Neck Pain
Stress commonly causes neck pain. Many patients bring their shoulders up towards their ears while under stress, a natural defense movement to protect the neck, which can cause this disorder. This condition usually resolves itself very quickly with acupuncture.

Muscle Spasms Neck Pain
The neck is a complex structure with both large and small muscles used to control the fine motor movement and support of the head. Many factors can cause a muscle in the neck to go into spasm. Possible causes may include working on the computer for long periods of time, event while exercising, poor nutrition, sitting under a fan or next to a window, and even a sneeze.

Pre- and Post Surgery Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a wonderful treatment option for patients planning or needing neck surgery. It has been my experience that patients receiving acupuncture before and after surgery recover at a much faster rate.

Note: One surgeon for whom I shared a patient could not believe how quickly the patient recovered after major neck surgery.
