ADHD / ADD & Acupuncture

The symptoms of ADHD and ADD have been defined as a child’s or adult’s inability to stay focused, frequent difficulty completing tasks, with feelings of frustration and/or anger.

As a parent and an acupuncturist, I urge all parents with children suffering from ADHD or ADD to try acupuncture. It is my belief that these disorders are caused by what is commonly referred to as internal heat, stress, hormone imbalances, and fatigue

Internal Heat
Let me explain the causes of internal heat in children. Internal heat is produced by the body normally. A growing body uses energy and energy produces heat. A child’s increased heart rate is also a cause of internal heat. A baby’s heart rate for example is between 100-160 beats per minute, a ten year old has a heart rate between 60-140 beats per minute and an adult athlete has a heart rate between 50-80 beats per minute. What this means is that a child can have a heart rate double the average adult's.

This extra heat caused by body growth and heart rate can affect a child’s ability to stay focused. Internal heat can cause other organ systems to go out of balance making the ADHD symptoms appear worse.

Have you ever noticed a child standing outside on a cold winter day in a pair of shorts or just a t-shirt? The child is totally comfortable because his body is producing enough heat to keep his internal organs warm. This is internal heat!

The good news is children respond quickly to treatment and their body’s can be put back into balance quickly with acupuncture.

Stress ADHD
I have seen this type of ADHD in my practice. The patient has ADHD but the condition is greatly aggravated by all different types of stressors which might include work, school, personal relationships, and lack of exercise.

Hormone Imbalance ADHD
Depending on the patient’s age the imbalance can be caused by an excess of one hormone or a deficiency of another hormone.

Another common imbalance is when one hormone level is high or low only in its relationship to other hormones in the body. In this case, the hormones are at normal blood levels, accept the relationship between the hormones or their ability communicate is out of balance.  Blood work levels appear normal but the imbalance in the relationship between two or more hormones produce ADHD and ADD symptoms.

Fatigue ADHD
A common type of ADHD, occurs because the brain needs energy to remain focused. In Chinese medicine energy is produced by the digestive system and repertory system, so a respiratory issue or digestive system issue can cause increased ADHD symptoms. Other causes and symptoms might include over work, lack of exercise, fatigue, weak voice, loose stools, cold hands and feet.
