Acupuncture & Treatment of Pain     Many people seek acupuncture for pain relief. Pain has many presentations. The first thing you need to understand about pain is it has a purpose. The purpose of pain is to inform you that something is wrong. A sore throat, back pain, all pain is a signal to pay attention to your body, something is wrong.

Pain can be acute, chronic, or recurring in nature. By acute we mean an immediate injury. Chronic meaning you have had the condition for awhile. Recurring meaning every once in awhile you experience this condition.

Myth 1: There is a myth that acupuncture can stop pain and keep your medical doctors from discovering a more serious underlying condition. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You can’t stop the pain signal for long without resolving the underlying problem. Turning the pain signal off! Deficiency Pain Symptoms are usually associated with conditions that feel better with warmth, movement, and pressure. What causes these problems? Some times the body does not have the time or resources available to completely heal an injury when it first occurs. a) Sometimes the original condition has been resolved by the body, surgery, drug therapy, or other treatment but the pain signal keeps firing causing the patient to feel as if they still have the original problem. b) Sometimes stopping pain for a period a time can keep the patient relaxed and still long enough for the body to finally finish repairs. In cases “a” and “b” above acupuncture can be used to turn the pain switches off, in both cases above the underlying problem is ultimately resolved. How does the acupuncturist fix a chronic problem? The acupuncturists will trigger the natural sequence events used by your body to repair itself. A good rule of thumb is if you feel 25% improvement after one treatment then four visits will be required. A 50% improvement after the first visit then you will probably require two or three treatments. In the unusual event, you only feel a 10% improvement after one office visit then ten treatments will be required. When one problem can cause many problems you have to pick your battles. One injury can create other injuries which make it impossible for the initial problem to resolve itself. Sometimes treating the second, third, and forth, condition gives the body the ability to finally devote all its attention to the original problem. For example, you hurt your foot and then a month later you have a knee problem, and two month later you hip hurts, and four months later your back hurts. Ok, after we resolve condition two, three, and four, the number one problem can get all the bodies’ attention and resources. Pain can feel better with warmth, better with cold, better with movement, better with rest, or sometimes nothing makes the condition improve.
