Patients seeking treatment for insomnia frequently suffer from ether a deficiency condition or repletion condition or a combination of both. An excellent example of a deficiency sleep pattern, for anyone who has cared for an infant, babies wake up every few hours to eat. This is a deficiency condition. The baby needs calories. Another excellent example of a deficiency sleep pattern is a menopausal woman. These women have a deficiency of estrogen. The deficiency results in interrupted sleep due to heat symptoms caused by a deficiency. An example of repletion sleep disorder is a person unable to sleep because they are worried about work, school, or other issue keeping them from sleeping. One technique I teach patients is to massage the acupuncture point Peaceful Sleep located on the back of the head. This point is great for people who can’t turn their mind off at night / “over thinking”. There are basically 5 patterns of insomnia in Chinese Medicine, each requiring a specific treatment to resolve. 1. Liver Fire Basically what this means is when under stress people experience insomnia, irritability, headache, bloodshot eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, thirst, dark urine, constipation. 2. Phlegm-Fire Insomnia, heaviness of the head, phlegm symptoms of any cause 3. Yin Vacuity Heat Menopause. tinnitus, hot hands and feet, night sweating, depression 4. Heart and Spleen Vacuity 5. Heart and Gallbladder Qi Vacuity Insomnia, frequent dreaming, wake from sleep frightened, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Easily weaken, sensitivity to an increase or decrease in carbohydrates intake, recent surgery or blood loss, heart disease
