Edema is a defined as the accumulation of fluid on the body. Edema can occur anywhere on the body.
I had an interesting case of edema of the face that occurred with a 49 year old female runner who was entering menopause. This patient’s facial swelling would resolve itself while the patient was on the acupuncture table. Part of the reason this woman responded so quickly to her treatment was her superior physical conditioning.
There are 5 causes of edema in Chinese Medicine. I will use traditional terms for educational purposes.
Acute-Wind-Heat
Water-Dampness
Pitting edema, patient can be overweight, lack of energy
Acute edema on the face
Edema, overweight, skin that is oily to the touch, heat intolerance
