Low back pain is a frequently encountered clinical condition this is commonly treated by acupuncturists and other health care providers. Low back Pain is frequently seen occurring on the sides of the spine, directly on the vertebrae, and referred to the leg. In Chinese Medicine low back pain is divided into three categories: aggravation of the condition due to weather changes (damp weather, cold weather, and hot weather), internal disorders, and injury. There are 5 patterns of back pain in Chinese Medicine. Each pattern requires a different treatment. For educational purposes I will use traditional terminology. 1. COLD DAMPNESS A patient will complain of pain of the lower back, PAIN ALLEVIATED WITH HEAT but not by resting and increase in PAIN WITH COLD OR RAINEY WEATHER. 2. DAMP HEAT 5. KIDNEY YIN VACUITY Patient complains of stabbing lower back PAIN OF FIXED LOCATION, aggravation of PAIN WITH EXTERNAL PREASURE 4. KIDNEY YANG VACUITY Back pain that is ache, feels better with pressure, fatigue, PHYSICAL COLD, PALE COMPLETION AND COLD EXTREMITIES. 3. BLOOD STASIS PATTERN Back pain, aching of the lower back, better with massage, fatigue, IRRITABILITY, INSOMNIA, DRY MOUTH, RET CHECKS, and HOT PALMS AND SOLES. Low back pain INCREASED PAIN with HOT or RAINY WEATHER.
