Abdominal pain is a frequently encountered clinical symptom and present for a wide variety of illnesses. There are 6 patterns of abdominal pain that is commonly defined in Chinese Medicine. For educational purposes I will use traditional terms.
Acute and sudden abdominal pain that is decreased with application of heat and increased with cold, loose stools.
1. Obstruction by Cold Evil
Abdominal pain that is increased by pressure, constipation
2. Obstruction by Damp Heat
Dull abdominal pain that is relieved by heat or pressure that increases when hungry or fatigued, loose stools, tiredness, physical cold.
3. Vacuity of Spleen Yang
Abdominal pain, increased pain by pressure, belching, foul gas, acid reflux
4. Obstruction of Food
Predominance of blood stasis, pain is severe and the location of the pain is definite and stationary
